Mahindra UDO Electric Auto: A New Era in Last-Mile Mobility
Mahindra Last Mile Mobility has recently unveiled the Mahindra UDO, a groundbreaking electric auto designed to transform last-mile transportation across Indian cities. This new electric three-wheeler, introduced at an introductory price of ₹3,58,999 (ex-showroom) for a limited period, represents a bold step forward in performance, comfort, safety and overall design compared to traditional auto-rickshaws that have remained largely unchanged for decades.
The company calls this vehicle an “autoplane” inspired by aircraft aesthetics and fittingly, the word UDO in Hindi means “to fly.” With sleek lines, bold headlamps, a wide windshield and stylish mirrors, the UDO stands apart visually from conventional three-wheelers, looking more contemporary and refined.
Aircraft-Inspired Design and Strong Build
Unlike standard autorickshaws built on simple frame structures, the Mahindra UDO is constructed using a full monocoque body, a first in its segment, which promises enhanced structural strength and ride stability. This advanced build not only gives it a robust presence on the road but also contributes to improved handling and durability under challenging city conditions. The design is the result of work by the team at Mahindra India Design Studio under noted designer Pratap Bose.
Inside, the UDO adopts a fresh approach to driver and passenger comfort. Mahindra has equipped the vehicle with what it calls a “pilot seat”, significantly thicker than typical auto seats, aimed at reducing fatigue during long hours of driving. Passengers benefit from increased legroom and headroom, making the cabin feel more like a small lounge than a cramped traditional auto. Independent rear suspension and dual-fork front suspension further smooth out bumpy city roads and uneven surfaces.
Performance and Real-World Range Focus
One of the key selling points of the Mahindra UDO is its claimed real-world driving range of up to 200 km, backed by an ARAI-certified range of 265 km, addressing the common range anxiety faced by electric commercial vehicle drivers. Powered by an 11.7 kWh IP67-rated lithium-ion battery pack and a PMS motor that delivers 10 kW of peak power and 52 Nm of torque, the UDO combines efficiency with performance suitable for urban and peri-urban mobility needs.
Drivers can choose between three drive modes Range, Ride and Race depending on traffic and load conditions. The Race mode allows a top speed of approximately 55 km/h, which can help drivers complete more trips daily and potentially increase earnings.
Smart Features for Urban Driving
Mahindra has also equipped the UDO with industry-first smart driving features to make city driving simpler and safer. These include reverse throttle, creep mode, hill hold assist, and regenerative braking. Reverse throttle helps control speed without constant braking, while creep mode is especially useful in slow-moving, bumper-to-bumper traffic. Hill hold assist prevents rollback on inclines, reducing driver stress in hilly terrain or congested routes. The regenerative braking system not only adds to safety but also helps extend the vehicle’s effective driving range.
Safety, Warranty and Ownership Benefits
Safety remains a strong focus for the UDO. It features powerful drum brakes for shorter stopping distances and 30.48 cm tubeless tyres that can better handle rough urban surfaces. The IP67-rated battery and drivetrain protection ensures resistance against dust and rain, making it more reliable in India’s varied weather conditions.
Mahindra backs the UDO with a warranty of six years or 1.5 lakh kilometres, whichever comes first, along with free servicing up to 1 lakh kilometres. Additionally, buyers are automatically enrolled in the UDAY NXT scheme, which includes ₹20 lakh accidental insurance cover and other support benefits, giving new EV owners peace of mind and added financial protection.
The Big Picture: Redefining Last-Mile Mobility
The launch of the Mahindra UDO comes at a time when India is already the largest electric three-wheeler market in the world, with Mahindra Last Mile Mobility being a dominant player in this category. In recent years, the company has sold hundreds of thousands of electric vehicles and expanded electrification rapidly across cities. As the market continues to evolve, the UDO’s focus on comfort, design, performance, and safety reflects a broader shift in last-mile mobility — aimed not just at cost-effective transport but at dignified, driver-friendly and future-ready solutions.
Manufactured at Mahindra’s upgraded Zaheerabad plant with automated battery assembly and robotised production lines, the UDO highlights the company’s commitment to innovating within the commercial EV space and accelerating India’s transition to cleaner, more efficient urban mobility.
If the UDO lives up to its promise in real-world operations, it is poised to set a new benchmark in how electric autos look, feel and perform, encouraging more drivers and fleet owners to make the switch to electrified last-mile transport.
